Red Sox stars that went to the Yankees

Jacoby Ellsbury is now a Yankee, after agreeing to a seven-year contract Tuesday and ending his seven-year tenure in Boston. He becomes the latest high-profile player to go directly from the Red Sox to the Yankees. A look at the other five biggest names to make the leap, and how they fared after donning pinstripes:

Babe Ruth

Red Sox: 6 seasons

Departed in 1920, age 25


After selling him, the Red Sox would go without a title until 2004. Ruth hit 659 of his 714 home runs with New York.

Wade Boggs

Red Sox: 11 seasons

Yankees: 5 seasons

Departed in 1993, age 35


After posting a .338 average for Boston, Boggs hit .313 for New York. He earned a title — and a celebratory ride on a police horse.

Johnny Damon

Red Sox: 4 seasons

Yankees: 4 seasons

Departed in 2006, age 32


Beloved member of the ’04 Sox team, Damon won another title in 2009 and hit a career-high 24 homers twice with New York.

Luis Tiant

Red Sox: 8 seasons

Yankees: 2 seasons

Departed in 1979, age 38


Tiant’s best years were behind him when he joined New York, but he won 21 games in two seasons.

Sparky Lyle

Red Sox: 5 seasons

Yankees: 7 seasons

Departed in 1972, age 27


Effective for Boston as a young reliever, Lyle blossomed as a Yankee. He saved 141 games and won a Cy Young Award.
