FOXBOROUGH — Littleton unleashed a potent offensive attack early and did not look back, topping Cohasset at Gillette Stadium, 52-35, Saturday for the Division 6 Super Bowl championship, its first in school history.

The Tigers (13-0), who scored 22 straight points to open the game, were led by senior back Travis Bassett, who scored three touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a Super Bowl-record-tying five TDs.

For coach Mike Lynn, a Littleton native and alum, the dream of winning a championship for his hometown finally became a reality.

“We went to two Super Bowls in the old [playoff] format and unfortunately we lost them both in ’08 and ’09. So it was some pressure on us . . . I feel like the monkey’s off our back at this point,” said Lynn. “This was the most grand stage in the state and a pretty great moment for us.”

The Tigers’ offensive barrage was not their first; they had scored 52 points in a game three times already this season. The 87 combined points by the teams is a Super Bowl record.

Lynn said Littleton’s athleticism set them apart from the school’s Super Bowl-contending teams of 2008 and 2009.

“We were more of a power football-type team back then,’’ he said “We were really big and physical and this team’s athleticism is what’s carried us, I think. We just have some kids that I think are some of the best athletes that will be on the field. It’s been a season of big-time athletes making big time plays.”

And no athlete showcased his ability more than Bassett, who had 263 yards rushing. His 49-yard and 3-yard rushing scores and 29-yard TD reception from Alex McLaughlin (5 for 9, 147 yards) in the first quarter gave his team a lead they held onto throughout the game.

“I’ve been crying since I’ve gotten off the field,” said an emotional Bassett, who also had a 2-point conversion and two interceptions. “It’s just an unbelievable feeling to have won it with my brothers and my family. I can’t wait to go home and celebrate it with everyone.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Cohasset (12-2) got things going in the second, scoring 20 points. Chris Haggerty rushed for two touchdowns (44- and 1-yard rushes) and Rocco Laugelle returned an interception 75 yards with nine seconds left in the quarter.

Pete Murphy caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from McLaughlin to give Littleton 30-20 lead at the half.

Bassett scored two more TDs in the fourth quarter (one a 76-yarder), and Haggerty had one rushing TD and one TD pass (to Liam Burke) before McLaughlin closed out the scoring with a 12-yard QB keeper with 2:27 left.
