UMass-Lowell hockey prevails

Josh Holmstrom, Scott Wilson, and Evan Campbell each scored goals as 10th-ranked UMass-Lowell beat No. 9 Clarkson, 3-1, to complete a two-game sweep Sunday at the Catamount Cup in Burlington, Vt.

Doug Carr made 18 saves for the River Hawks (13-5), who opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Canisius. UMass-Lowell has won eight of its last nine games.

Ben Sexton scored and Greg Lewis finished with 31 saves for the Golden Knights (12-5-1), who lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Clarkson lost to host Vermont, 3-2, on Saturday.

It marked the first of three straight meetings between the teams. UMass-Lowell will host Clarkson on Friday and Saturday at Tsongas Arena.

In the nightcap, Vermont (10-6-1) rolled to a 6-2 victory over Canisius (5-10-1), completing a two-game sweep in tournament play.

The Catamounts received goals from Chris McCarthy, Pete Massar, Mario Puskarich, Michael Paliotta, Brendan Bradley, and Jake Fallon. Duncan McKellar and Shane Conacher scored for Canisius.

Providence 3, Dartmouth 2 — Derek Army scored a pair of goals to lead the fifth-ranked Friars (13-2-3) over the host Big Green (2-11) in the opening round of the Ledyard National Bank Classic in Hanover, N.H.

Brad Schierhorn and Charlie Mosey scored for Dartmouth before Ross Mauermann’s power-play goal in the third period decided it.

Air Force 5, Northeastern 2 — Mitch Torrel scored a pair of goals to lead the Falcons (8-5-4) to a victory over the 16th-ranked Huskies (10-6-2) in the opening round of the Ledyard National Bank Classic in Hanover, N.H.

Scott Holm had a goal and an assist, while Cole Gunner and Ben Barey each scored goals as Air Force ended a six-game winless streak. Alex O’Halloran had a pair of assists for the Falcons, and Jason Torf made 14 saves.

Braden Pimm scored both goals for Northeastern. Clay Witt made 24 saves.

Yale 4, Holy Cross 1 — Stu Wilson and Cody Learned each had a goal and an assist to lead the 11th-ranked Bulldogs (7-3-3) over the Crusaders (4-11-2) in New Haven, Conn.

Kenny Agostino and Anthony Day added goals for Yale, and Alex Lyon stopped 21 shots. Matt Vidal scored the lone goal and Matt Ginn made 33 saves for Holy Cross.

Quinnipiac 2, UMass 2 — Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Sam Anas scored in the shootout as the eighth-ranked Bobcats (13-3-4) advanced to Monday’s title game of the UConn Classic in Hartford. Quinnipiac will face Sacred Heart.

Kellen Jones opened the scoring at 1:28 of the first period before the Minutemen (6-12-3) answered with goals by Emerson Auvenshine and Troy Power to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Tim Clifton tied the game for the Bobcats at 1:28 of the second period.

After a scoreless third period, Anas appeared to net the winner in overtime, but the goal was disallowed because of a high stick, sending the game into a shootout.

Michael Garteig made 19 saves for Quinnipiac, and stopped Brennan Baxandall and Adam Phillips in the shootout. Steve Mastalerz made 36 saves for UMass.

Sacred Heart 3, UConn 0 — Coltyn Hansen had a goal and an assist as the Pioneers (5-12) beat the host Huskies (6-6-2) to advance to the final of the UConn Classic in Hartford.

Ben Lake and Chad Filteau also scored for Sacred Heart, and Alex Vazzano made 29 saves to record the shutout.

New Hampshire 3, Princeton 2 — Justin Agosta had a goal and an assist as the Wildcats (10-10-1) rallied past the Tigers (3-14) at the Florida College Classic in Estero.

Mike Ambrosia beat Casey DeSmith at 13:53 of the first period to give Princeton a 1-0 lead. Casey Thrush tied it with 54 seconds left in the period before the Tigers regained the lead on Aaron Kesselman’s goal at 2:43 of the second period.

Agosta answered six minutes later on the power play before Matt Willows netted the winner at 13:51 of the second period on a power play.

DeSmith made 21 saves for New Hampshire, which lost its tournament opener on Saturday to Cornell, 4-2. Sean Bonar made 43 saves to keep Princeton in the game.

Cornell 1, Maine 1 — Christian Hilbrich scored for the Big Red (8-4-3), and Devin Shore for the Black Bears (10-6-2) as they played to a tie at the Florida College Classic in Estero.
