Rather than focus on preparing for one or more of New England’s possible opponents, the Patriots “spent a lot of time on ourselves” during their playoff bye week, Tom Brady told WEEI Monday morning. Still, the Patriots quarterback said he caught “most of all” of the four wild card games played over the weekend.
“We’ve been identifying what we need to do better and the places where we’ve been really deficient, really over the course of the whole season,” Brady told the Dennis & Callahan show. “As soon as that game yesterday and we knew we were playing the Colts, the countdown really began.”
Brady said he saw some similarities in the way Indianapolis came back from a large deficit vs. the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday and the way the Patriots have climbed out of several holes this season.
“They kind of dug themselves in a little bit of a hole there and they dug their way out of it. We’ve been in that situation where we’ve been down and haven’t really played great at any point in the game, and all of a sudden you catch some momentum.”
While not meant as a slight to the young Colts quarterback, Brady said he hasn’t given one bit of thought to his “matchup” with Andrew Luck, or comparisons between the two players at similar points in their careers. Luck threw four touchdown passes vs. the Chiefs Saturday. It took Brady until his sixth career playoff game to throw his fourth touchdown pass.
“I’m not worried about the opposing quarterback,” said Brady. “I’m worried about the defense and what I need to do to play against them. I didn’t watch one snap of Indy’s offense, nor will I this week. I’ll be focused on the defense and what we need to do to score points. That’s what my job is.
“They can obviously score a lot of points on offense, and defensively they probably have the defensive player of the year in Robert Mathis. They’re a very good team, there’s no doubt about it. You can’t be playing this time of year without being a very good team.”
On Mathis, who has 19½ sacks on the season, Brady said, “He wreaks a lot of havoc. We’ve got to be able to slow him down. We’ve got to be balanced on offense like we’ve been. We’ve got to run it. And when we throw it we’ve got to throw it good.”
“We’ve got to put everything in. It’s the biggest week of our year.”
