Rajon Rondo’s tenure in Maine was brief

The Celtics recalled point guard Rajon Rondo from the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League Wednesday after briefly assigning him there earlier in the day.

The plan was for Rondo to work out with the minor league team before being ready to rejoin the Celtics.

“Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step,” said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. “This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout.”

Rondo has not played for the Celtics this season since undergoing knee surgery early last year. The move leaves him eligible to return to the Celtics Friday night vs. the Lakers.
