The first round of the Division 1A boys’ high school hockey tournament, the Super 8, will begin at TD Garden March 2, the MIAA announced Friday. The first of four games on the day will get underway at noon.
The first round consists of four best-of-three series, and only the first game of each series will be played at the Garden. The rest of the first-round games will be played at a location to be determined.
The first round has bounced around in recent years, including opening up at the Tsongas Center in Lowell in 2013. Typically, only the final is played at the Garden.
TD Garden is always a target, MIAA associate executive director Richard Pearson said, but it’s usually unavailable — either the Bruins or Celtics are playing, or there is a concert scheduled.
That wasn’t the case this year. The Bruins are away that weekend and the Celtics will wrap up a home game against the Indiana Pacers about 14 hours before the puck will drop on the Super 8.
“The TD Garden has always collaborated with us,” Pearson said. “The challenge would always be the availability of the facility. It happens that they can make it happen that Sunday.
“When the opportunity presents itself and it’s convenient for us and them, it’s a nice reach-out for our athletes.”
