What They Were Thinking: Snowboarding in Canton

Stan Grossfeld/Globe Staff

Every Sunday, Boston Globe photographer Stan Grossfeld asks the subject of one of his photos to explain what’s happening in the shot.

Who’s up today: John Vieira of Brockton snowboards at Blue Hills Ski Area in Canton, Jan. 23, 2014.

Vieira: “I worked overnight at the Stop & Shop warehouse in Freetown but I definitely wanted to come out here. I’m kind of tired but this is my first time to come out and ride. I’m just trying to get better at snowboarding. So the morning is the best time to come over here. It’s not like I’m cold or anything. It’s a small mountain, it’s simple, but if you’re trying to learn, it’s the best place to come. It’s not too hard, and if you’re trying to get better, the hill is nice and steep here. I would recommend it to anybody who’s trying to learn to ski or snowboard. It’s fun. If you enjoy snowboarding, it’s a nice place to come down and ride. Oh man, I just fell, like, 30 minutes ago and I had to take, like, five minutes just to recover. But I do it for the joy of it.”
