What They Were Thinking: Checking the paper

Stan Grossfeld/Globe Staff

Every Sunday, Boston Globe photographer Stan Grossfeld asks the subject of one of his photos to explain what’s happening in the shot.

What’s up today: Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes reads the Sunday Globe sports section while waiting to be photographed during Photo Day at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla., Feb. 23, 2014.

Gomes: “I’m looking to see who’s burying me today. You know Paul Hagen [2013 winner of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing]? We’re related. He’s a Hall of Famer. He went in all by himself. He’s my wife’s uncle. Listen, I don’t look too far into [the sports section], to tell you the truth. No pressure, no pressure. You’d have zero self-esteem if you believed everything you read. It’s more of a picture book. I would bet people don’t read Sox things now. I didn’t read [about] the Olympics, either. I watched it.”
