Ryan Hall among additions to Boston Marathon field

Americans Ryan Hall and Abdi Abdirahman, and Kenyan Mathew Bowen have been added to the elite field for the 2014 Boston Marathon, race sponsor John Hancock Financial announced Monday.

Three other elite men have withdrawn — American Dathan Ritzenhein, Kenya’s Moses Mosop, and Australia’s Jeffrey Hunt.

Hall holds the Boston Marathon record for Americans (2:04.58 in 2011), and has run the race three times. He was third in 2009, and fourth in 2010 and 2011. He had planned to run in last year’s race but withdrew in March because an injury prevented him from properly training.

“I am incredibly excited to participate in this year’s Boston Marathon,” Hall said in a news release. “After watching the tragic events that unfolded at last year’s race and knowing the resilience of both the running and Boston communities, I knew this year’s race was going to be a run of redemption that I am eager to be a part of. This year’s race will undoubtedly be the most historically significant marathon in Boston’s storied history.”

Abdirahman and Hall were both members of the 2012 US Olympic team.

Bowen is the husband of 2012 Boston Marathon winner Sharon Cherop and is new to the marathon distance. His personal best is 2:10.57 at a marathon in Rennes, France.
