What’s up today: High jumper Eric Wicks of St. John’s of Shrewsbury clears 5 feet 8 inches at the 20th annual Route 228 Invitational in Hingham on April 12. He won the event at 5-9.

Wicks: “I wanted to keep my knees up so I could get higher over the bar. I actually thought to myself, ‘I’ve got it,’ and I did. I could feel my body going over the bar. You’ve got to keep your body square to the bar and just go for it. You’ve got to feel the bar under you and then kick up. If you wait too long, you kick [the bar] off. Then when you land on it, that’s definitely the worst. It really hurts. It definitely helps to be outside. Indoors, you don’t really get the experience of it all, you don’t get out in the sun, just having fun.”
