Meb Keflezighi fulfills ‘dream’ as US winner

Meb Keflezighi was the first US male to win the Boston Marathon in 31 years. He was the oldest champion in 83 years. But his victory Monday afternoon, perhaps the most emotional and daring in the history of the world’s most fabled road race, was about more than him.

“Boston strong, America strong,” declared the 38-year-old Keflezighi after he ran away from the field, then hung on to hold off Kenya’s Wilson Chebet by 11 seconds in 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 37 seconds in the 118th running of an event that was terminated by terrorist bombs last year. “To come back from what was a disaster to a patriotic day . . . ”
