The Red Sox have summoned righthander Alex Wilson from Triple A Pawtucket to bolster their overworked bullpen for Wednesday’s game against the Yankees.
Outfielder Daniel Nava has been optioned to Pawtucket.
Wilson, 27, last pitched on Monday. He has appeared in eight games, throwing eight shutout innings. Wilson allowed four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Wilson could well be on the roster for one day. The Red Sox are planning to activate right fielder Shane Victorino off the disabled list on Thursday and returning the extra pitcher to Pawtucket is likely to be the corresponding move.
Red Sox relievers have thrown 11 innings over the last two games.
Nava is 10 of 67 (.149) with a .240 on-base percentage. The 31-year-old hit .303 with an .831 OPS last season.
