Roundup: Jess Proia lifts Framingham to upset win

Framingham righthander Jess Proia is at her best in big games. When she faced Bay State Conference rival Newton North, she hit another gear.

The senior recorded 16 strikeouts and allowed two earned runs over seven innings in an 8-4 win on Tuesday, helping the Flyers (9-4) hand the No. 3-ranked Tigers (11-1) their first loss of the season. Proia also went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, belting a two-run homer in the third inning to give Framingham the lead for good.

Newton North scored two runs in the first and one in the third to pull ahead, 3-0, but Proia and the Flyers responded with five runs in the third. Junior Taylor Hogan and senior Alex Gibbons opened the frame with back-to-back triples, and Gibbons scored on senior Marisa Sanchez’s fielder’s choice. Then Proia came to bat with Sanchez on base and, with one swing, put the Flyers ahead, 4-3.

“She comes to play, and her teammates feed off of that,” Framingham coach Erin Powers said. “No matter what the score is, they’re going to fight back. Jess exemplifies that mind-set, and our players really follow that example.”

West Bridgewater 5, Avon 0 — Only one ball left the infield on Tuesday against the Wildcats’ Derek O’Brien, who recorded 13 strikeouts with one walk in a no-hitter against the Panthers.

It was the first career no-hitter for the senior righthander, who faced 25 batters — just four over the minimum.

“The umpire said it’s the best-pitched game he’s seen in the last six years,” said West Bridgewater coach Jack Outerbridge. “He was throwing his curveball for strikes, getting ahead of hitters with his fastball, and he spotted his pitches well.”

O’Brien relied heavily on his curveball, rarely shaking off senior catcher Tyler Taccini.

“I usually rely on it about 30, 40 percent, but today I threw it maybe 60 percent,” O’Brien said. “There were a few hitters that I threw a first-pitch curve.”

Brighton 9, South Boston 2 — Freshman Tyler Allan fired a two-hitter and fanned eight for the Bengals.

North Reading 9, Amesbury 8 — With two outs and the bases loaded, senior third basemen Tom Day walked off with an RBI base on balls in the seventh inning.
