Bruins call up Matt Fraser, demote Justin Florek

The Bruins have called up left wing Matt Fraser ahead of Thursday’s Game 4 of their second-round playoff series against the Canadiens.

Fraser is eligible to play Thursday in Montreal. Left wing Justin Florek was sent down to Providence, which opens its next Calder Cup playoff series Friday at the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Penguins.

Fraser, who played 14 games for the Bruins this season, brings more offensive presence than Florek because of his NHL-quality release and shot. However, getting open was an issue in his earlier recall.

One possibility for Game 4 would be putting Fraser on the third line with Carl Soderberg at center and Loui Eriksson at right wing, leaving Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton to skate on the fourth line.

At Providence, Fraser was tied for third in goals with 20 in the regular season. He had three goals and two assists in Providence’s first-round playoff series victory over the Springfield Falcons. The Bruins acquired Fraser in last summer’s trade with the Dallas Stars involving Tyler Seguin.

Florek played in six playoff games for the Bruins and scored one goal in the opening-round series vs. the Red Wings.
