FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots selected Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the 30th pick (62d overall) in the second round of Friday’s NFL Draft.
Garoppolo, a 6-foot-2-inch, 226-pound righthanded thrower, had a breakout senior season, throwing for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns, with nine interceptions.
It is possible Garoppolo will be Tom Brady’s backup in 2014.
Current backup Ryan Mallett has thrown four passes in three seasons and didn’t play a single snap in 2013. He was originally a third-round pick in 2011 and is entering the final year of his contract.
Before the NFL Draft began Thursday night, the Patriots and Texans were discussing a trade that would have sent Mallett to Houston, a league source confirmed to the Globe, but the trade never materialized.
