The feel-good story of Grady Sizemore came to an end in Boston Tuesday, as the Red Sox designated the outfielder for assignment.
The former Cleveland Indians All-Star outfielder played 52 games for the Red Sox after missing all of the last two seasons following a series of surgeries for various ailments. But he hit only .216, and with the Sox struggling to get to the .500 mark, they felt a move had to be made.
Infielder Garin Cecchini was recalled from Pawtucket.
Sizemore, 31, was a long-shot signing by the Sox but made the team out of spring training
Brock Holt, who moved into Sizemore’s locker at Fenway Park, was listed as the starter in center field against the Twins for Tuesday night’s game.
