Stat of the Day I: The Red Sox have not drawn a walk in three consecutive games. That hasn’t happened going back to at least 1914. They have struck out 24 times in those three games.

East Bay bummers: The Sox have lost 16 of their last 21 games at Oakland. Overall, they have lost 13 of 18 against the Athletics.


Notes: Oakland will start Mills, whom it obtained from Milwaukee for $1 earlier this week. The 29-year-old was 4-2 with a 1.56 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) with Triple A Nashville. He has not pitched in the majors since July 8, 2012 when he was with the Angels. Mills has faced the Red Sox three times (last in 2011) and allowed seven earned runs over six innings . . . Doubront is coming off the disabled list to make the start for the Red Sox. He last pitched in the majors May 20 and was 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA in three minor league starts. Doubront is 1-2, 8.56 in three starts against Oakland and last pitched at Oakland Coliseum on Sept. 1, 2012. when he allowed five runs over three innings . . . The Sox are 18-20 in games decided by two runs or one . . . Xander Bogaerts is 4 of 39 in his last 11 games with one extra-base, two RBIs, and two walks. He has dropped from .299/.387/.452 to .269/.353/.412 . . . Oakland has played 73 games without using a rookie, the longest since Cleveland went 82 games in 2005 . . . The Athletics have scored 36 runs on 59 hits in their last five games . . . Oakland has the best record in baseball but is 2-2 against the Sox this season, getting outscored, 17-11.
