Newton South was the Globe’s top pick from the beginning in boys’ volleyball, and when it mattered most, the Lions upped the ante to take home their first-ever MIAA state trophy.

The Lions set a high bar for boys’ volleyball, capping their perfect season with a 25-game win streak, while posting some of the best stats coach Todd Elwell has ever seen. Needham was their toughest competition, losing in five sets to the Lions in the sectional final.

Acton-Boxboro had a turnaround year under Mark Starr, who transformed a 1-15 program his starting year into an 18-3 state semifinalist.

Expect returnees at Newton South, Needham, Chelmsford, Greater New Bedford, and Newton North to keep their squads in the running next year.
