For the Westwood girls’ lacrosse team, the feeling of losing in the Division 1 South final last year was more than enough motivation for coach Leslie Frank and the seniors to come back much stronger this season.

After cruising through the regular season and dominating the postseason, the Division 1 state champion is the top-ranked team in the final Top 20. Westwood (24-0) finished as the only undefeated team in the state.

The Division 1 South runner-up, Notre Dame (Hingham), proved it wasn’t a one-and-done team and finished at No. 2. The Division 1 East champion, Franklin, follows the Cougars as the third-ranked team.

The previous No. 13, Bishop Feehan, drops from the poll after losing in the first round of the Division 1 East tournament. No. 20 Natick also fell out after getting eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The removal of Bishop Feehan and Natick left spots open for No. 9 Norwell (Division 2 South) and No. 10 Newburyport (Division 1 North), each of which captured a sectional title.

The addition of Norwell and Newburyport caused some shifting in the bottom half of the poll. The most noticeable shift was Watertown, which fell five spots to No. 16 from its previous ranking. No. 17 Walpole, No. 18 Masconoment, No. 19 Scituate, and No. 20 Dartmouth each dropped one spot.
