Jarome Iginla scored 30 goals and 31 assists for the Bruins in 2013-14.

The Bruins’ top-line right wing, Jarome Iginla, has agreed to a deal with the Colorado Avalanche for a total of $16 million over three years, TSN reported.

Those were terms that the Bruins simply couldn’t match, despite a desire on both sides to get a deal done.

The Bruins are faced with less than $6 million in salary cap room, and that includes new deals for restricted free agents Reilly Smith and Torey Krug, both of whom are due raises this season. Iginla was likely to get only a one-year deal in Boston, similar to the one he signed last offseason, loaded with bonuses. That wasn’t enough for the winger, who turned 37 on Tuesday, the same day free agency began in the NHL.

Iginla, who had 30 goals with the Bruins this season, is likely to be replaced on the top line by Loui Eriksson, which will stretch the depth of a team known for its depth.
