Red Sox-Yankees preview: Yoenis Cespedes not in starting lineup

Allen Craig, acquired in the trade that sent John Lackey to St. Louis, will make his Red Sox debut Friday in left field. Craig is batting fifth.

However, Yoenis Cespedes, whom the Red Sox received in the Jon Lester trade, is not in the starting lineup.

Mookie Betts has been recalled from Pawtucket and will start in center field, while Xander Bogaerts moves back to shortstop and Will Middlebrooks returns from the disabled list and will play third base and bat seventh.


The Red Sox have aso designated outfielder/first baseman Mike Carp for assignment.

Stephen Drew, whom the Red Sox traded to the Yankees for Kelly Johnson on Thursday, will start at second base Friday and bat eighth.

Newcomer notes: Craig was hitless in his last 13 at-bats for the Cardinals and hit .122/.204/.204 in July. Craig has not played in a regular-season game at Fenway but was 4 for 11 in three Word Series games last fall. … Cespedes is a career 6-of-24 hitter at Fenway in six games, but does not have a home run. He has hit .326/.333/.630 in 11 games since the All-Star break with three home runs.

Jeter meter: Derek Jeter will be playing in his 140th game at Fenway, his most for any stadium outside of the Bronx. … Jeter has 3,422 career hits, having recently passed Carl Yastrzemski and Honus Wagner. He needs 14 more to pass Cap Anson for sixth place in history.


Other notes: The new-look Red Sox return after a day off. They are 12.5 games out of first place and have lost three straight and eight of nine. … The Yankees are five games out of first in the AL East and 3.5 games out in the wild card. … Ranaudo, 24, is making his major league debut. He was the 39th overall pick of the 2010 draft out of LSU and was 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA at Triple A Pawtucket. … Capuano is making his second start for the Yankees after being purchased from the Rockies. He pitched 28 games in relief for the Red Sox earlier this season before being released. Capuano is facing the Red Sox for the second time in his career. He started against them last Aug. 25 while a member of the Dodgers and allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings. … The Red Sox have scored 18 runs in their last nine games while hitting .217 with a .599 OPS. They have eight hits in their last 59 at-bats with runners in scoring position. … Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitless in his last 16 at-bats. … David Ortiz has 13 RBIs in his last nine games.
