Jake Farrell returns as Xaverian’s quarterback in 2014.

For the third time in the past 10 years, Xaverian is No. 1 in the Boston Globe’s preseason Top 20 football poll.

Central Catholic, which beat Xaverian in last year’s Division 1 Super Bowl, is No. 2. If the rankings hold up, the two teams could meet at Gillette again this December.

Mansfield, Everett, and Bridgewater-Raynham hold down the 3, 4, and 5 spots. All three had successful seasons a year ago, with Mansfield capturing the Division 2 title and finishing as the Globe’s No. 1 team.

At No. 6, Lowell’s defense is its strong suit, and the Red Raiders will look to build off last year’s 7-4 campaign. Lowell allowed just 13.5 points per game last year and returns some of its top players on that side of the ball.

Natick lost Troy Flutie, but the team is still poised for another good year. St. John’s Prep, Marshfield, and Bishop Fenwick all have explosive offenses. Abington and Plymouth North are potent enough on both sides of the ball to earn a spot in the Top 20.
