Week 2: High school football Players of the Week

Division 1

Noah Sorrento, Xaverian — The senior back rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the Hawks’ 21-14 win over Everett Saturday afternoon. He was also a major contributor for a defense that yielded just 14 total yards in the first half.

Andrew Papa, Malden — Completing 11 of his 20 attempts, Papa threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-15 nonleague win over Oliver Ames.

Jeff Costello, Lexington — The junior quarterback punched in a 1-yard run in overtime to lift the Minutemen to a 35-27 overtime win over Wakefield. He accounted for 269 yards (144 rushing, 125 passing), while rushing for two scores and throwing for two others.

Doug Santos, Peabody — The junior back rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns Friday night in the Tanners’ 43-7 win over Lynn English.

Nick Philippon, Chelmsford — In a 31-0 shutout of Westford, Philippon rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

Chandler Debrosse, New Bedford — The senior racked up five touchdowns (three rushing, two passing), rushed for 133 yards, and passed for 138. He was also 7 for 7 on extra points.

Brian McAndrew and Mike Baglieri, Methuen — The Rangers lost a thriller to Lawrence, 43-42, but McAndrew (206 yards rushing, 3 TDs) and Baglieri (171 yards rushing, 2 TDs) combined for 377 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Division 2

Brendan Hill, Mansfield — The All-Scholastic tight end had 181 yards on six receptions, a 45-yard touchdown reception and a crucial 67-yard catch that set up the game-winning score in the Hornets’ 21-20 win over Milton.

Nick Olson, Natick — In a 47-15 Bay State Conference victory over Weymouth, the quarterback threw for 224 yards, three touchdowns and rushed for another TD.

Brian Dunlap, Natick — The Harvard-bound senior had 123 receiving yards on four catches, including three touchdowns, one of which was a 58-yard punt return.

Jahvae Handsom-Field, Quincy — The running back rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in a 29-8 nonleague win over Braintree.

Division 3

Nick Smith, Whitman-Hanson — The junior QB picked up 67 yards on the ground and threw for 135 — accounting for five touchdowns and three 2-point conversions — as the Panthers pounced on Pembroke, 43-15, earning their first win since 2012.

Mark Tonucci, Somerset Berkley — The senior back ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns, propelling the 2-0 Raiders by Archbishop Williams.

Kaleb Silva, Revere — The Patriots squeaked by Medford, 35-34, as Silva ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

Will Millett, Marblehead — Millett and quarterback Spencer Craig are becoming one of the more formidable tandems in all of Division 3. Millett finished with 222 yards and three touchdowns Friday as Marblehead rolled by Lynn Classical, 48-15

Matt Carnevale, Beverly — Carnevale had three interceptions -- out of five by the victorious Panthers.

Marvin Jean, Woburn — Jean had 14 carries for 199 yards and four touchdowns as the Tanners cruised to a 48-22 win over Billerica.

Kyle Taggart, Masconomet — In an overtime win over Melrose, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound tackle paved the way for a 200-plus yard rushing performance. On defense, he was in on eight tackles with three unassisted., and three quarterback hurries.

Ryan Sullivan, Stoughton — The sophomore had 265 total yards. He rushed for 117 yards on nine carries and had six receptions for 148 yards and three TD’s. On defense Sullivan had eight tackles.

Division 4

Michael Dunn, Dennis-Yarmouth — He ran for one touchdown and also caught a TD pass as the No. 9 Dolphins improved to 2-0 with a 20-14 win over Plymouth North.

Nick Athy, Holliston — The senior QB rushed for three touchdowns and threw for three more in Holliston’s 42-6 win over Norwood.

Dan Sullivan, Lynnfield — He rushed for a touchdown and threw for another one in the Pioneers’ 32-0 win over Newburyport.

Luke Boyle, Triton — Boyle rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-6 romp over Amesbury.

Jack Germinara, Triton — Germinara took back two interceptions back for touchdowns (62- and 20 yards) for the Vikings against Amesbury.

Division 5

Rufus Rushins, Matt Renzulli, Bishop Fenwick – Rushings, a senior back, racked up 117 yards and a touchdown as the Crusaders knock off Hamilton-Wenham, 27-6. Renzulli, a senior QB, was 8 of 12 passing, with 137 yards and three touchdowns.

Dexter Andrews, Brighton – The senior half back ran for 300 yards and three touchdowns, while also catching four balls for 75 yards as Brighton edged Martha’s Vineyard, 28-13.

Abraham Toe, St. Mary’s – The sophomore carried the ball 18 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns as St. Mary’s defeated Swampscott, 18-14.

Darien Dumond, Old Rochester — In a shutout win over case, Dumond scored three touchdowns, one on a punt return, one an interception return, and one a 3-yard run.

Division 6

Yordany Sanchez, Essex Tech — For the second consecutive week, the receiver-turned-quarterback anchored a potent offensive attack. In a 50-6 win over Blue Hills Saturday, Sanchez lifted the offense with two TDs on the ground and one through the air.

Steven Thomas, New Mission — Thomas has had a lot to do with New Mission’s 2-0 start. In a 36-6 win over rival Southie, Thomas rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns.

Emmanuel Almonte, Boston English — After a breakout junior season in which piled up 1,600-plus yards rushing, he opened with a 221-yard, one-touchdown effort in a 20-12 victory over East Boston.

Diego Meritus, Pope John Paul II — The Tigers had the highest scoring offense in EMass last season (42.8 points per game) and Meritus was the fuel that kept the machine running. In the 57-36 win over St. Clement, he rushed for 151 yards and three TDs on just 9 carries. He also led the defense with a 40-yard pick six.
