New York team wins Little League World Series

The team from Endwell, N.Y., became the first US winner of the Little League World Series in five years, and the first New York titlist since 1964, by beating South Korea, 2-1, Sunday in South Williamsport, Pa. Ryan Harlost struck out eight and limited the team from Seoul to five hits in six innings. Conner Rush had Endwell’s only RBI in the bottom of the fourth. Harlost scored the deciding run on a passed ball a batter later. ‘‘It was all of our last years of Little League,’’ Rush said. ‘‘So it’s just awesome to know that we all came together to be the best team in the world.’’ The most recent American champion was Huntington Beach, Calif., in 2011.

Pirates’ Cole to get elbow examined

Pirates ace Gerrit Cole will not make his scheduled start Monday against the Cubs in Chicago, instead heading to Los Angeles to get an outside opinion on his ailing right elbow. Pittsburgh, which is a half-game out of the NL’s second wild-card spot, will start rookie Steven Brault instead. Cole has a 7.06 ERA over his last four starts . . . Baltimore signed righthander Tommy Hunter, bringing the former Oriole back into the bullpen fold. Hunter was 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 games for Cleveland this season. He was in the minors rehabbing a back injury when the Indians cut him on Thursday. Hunter played for Baltimore from 2011-15, going 21-20 with a 4.22 ERA.

Jutanugarn gets 5th LPGA title of season

Ariya Jutanugarn ran away with the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open at chilly Priddis Greens in Alberta for her LPGA Tour-leading fifth victory of the year. The second-ranked Thai player shot a 6-under-par 66 for a four-stroke victory. Jutanugarn matched the tournament record of 23 under set by So Yeon Ryu two years ago at London Hunt in Ontario, and the mark for strokes of 265 set by Ryu and also accomplished by Lydia Ko in 2013 at par-70 Royal Mayfair in Edmonton. South Korea’s Sei Young Kim, a two-time winner this year, was second after a 65 . . . Thomas Pieters improved his chances of earning a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup by winning the Made in Denmark tournament for his third European title. The 24-year-old Belgian finished with three birdies for a 6-under 65 on the day and a 17-under total of 267 to beat Bradley Dredge by one stroke. Team Europe captain Darren Clarke is scheduled to announce his three picks for the Ryder Cup on Tuesday . . . Bernhard Langer made a 3-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff with Woody Austin and Kevin Sutherland to win the Champions Tour’s Boeing Classic for the second time. Langer birdied the par-5 18th in regulation for a 5-under 67 to match Austin (67) and Sutherland (64) at 13-under 203 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington . . . Ryan Brehm won the Web.com Tour's regular-season ending WinCo Foods Portland Open to earn a PGA Tour card.

Sun’s three-game win streak broken

The Connecticut Sun had their three-game win streak broken in Atlanta as the Dream pulled away for an 87-73 victory. The Sun’s Chiney Ogwumike scored a game-high 24 points, while Layshia Clarendon and Angel McCoughtry had 19 apiece for Atlanta . . . The Minnesota Lynx improved to 22-5 with a 92-80 home win over the Seattle Storm in which Lindsay Whalen pumped in 24 points . . . Elena Delle Donne’s 18 points pushed the Chicago Sky to a 92-85 win over the host Dallas Wings . . . The San Antonio Stars used a 26-6 second-quarter advantage to beat the Mystics, 85-74, in Washington . . . Diana Taurasi scored 26 points and made two free throws with eight seconds left to ice the Phoenix Mercury’s 70-66 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.

Breakers forge a rare win streak in NWSL

The Boston Breakers picked up their second straight win, and their third of the NWSL season, by defeating FC Kansas City, 2-0, in Kansas City, Mo. Katie Schoepfer scored in the 38th minute and Kristie Mewis struck in the 81st . . . Clint Dempsey missed the Seattle Sounders’ 4-2 road loss to the Portland Timbers as he undergoes evaluations for an irregular heartbeat . . . Kaka scored a goal in each half of Orlando City’s 2-1 home win over New York City FC.

BC appoints four seniors as captains

Boston College seniors Truman Gutapfel, John Johnson, Tyler Rouse, and Myles Willis were voted football team captains, coach Steve Addazio announced. Gutapfel and Johnson played key roles on the Eagles’ top-ranked defense last season, while Rouse and Willis have combined to rush for 1,829 yards . . . Pro wrestling legend Harry Fujiwara — better known as Mr. Fuji — died at 82. No cause was reported by the WWE . . . Nico Rosberg trimmed rival Lewis Hamilton’s lead in the Formula One title race after winning the Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton was third from a back-row start. Starting from pole position, Rosberg moved to within 9 points of his Mercedes teammate. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished second . . . World and Olympic champion Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland broke her own hammer world record with a throw of 82.98 meters in Warsaw.
