Where did David Ortiz get his nickname? Kevin Millar claims it was him

As the Red Sox got their playoff series against the Astros underway this week, former Sox player Kevin Millar reminisced about his time with the 2004 World Series-winning team and took credit for David Ortiz’s famous nickname.

“When you don’t know Latin guys, [you call them] ‘Papi! Papi!’” Millar told Seth Meyers on the late night host’s show Wednesday night.

“Wait, so you call all Latin guys ‘Papi’?” Meyers asked.

“‘Papi’ was ‘Papi,’ then he got big, so I didn’t know. I didn’t know he was going to get 500 homeruns. So he was just ‘Papi.’ Now he’s ‘Big Papi.’”

Sitting with Sean Casey, another former Sox player who played in Boston in 2008, Millar talked about reuniting with old teammates and noticing changes to their bodies after they stopped playing baseball.

“Some of my old players look like they ate themselves,” Millar said. “We all put on those extra 20 to 60 pounds.”

But not Ortiz, Meyers points out.

“Right, Papi’s not Big Papi,” Millar said. “He’s like Papi.”
