Only some 48 hours into their on-ice workouts, the Bruins learned Saturday that Frank Vatrano, one of their young guns hoping to land a full-time spot at forward, will require surgery on his left foot and be sidelined for some three months.

According to general manager Don Sweeney, Vatrano, 22, tore ligaments during a recent training session, prior to the players reporting to Brighton on Thursday for pre-camp testing day.

“We took a couple of days for proper evaluation,’’ noted Sweeney, following the club’s second day of workouts on Saturday at Warrior Ice Arena. “He saw a specialist [Friday]. He is scheduled for surgery Monday and likely will be out for three months. One or two of the ligaments were torn when he was doing some running.’’

Vatrano, a 5-foot-9-inch, 200-pound winger who was a former standout at UMass Amherst, led the American Hockey League in goal scoring last season with 36 strikes in 36 games. He wasn’t nearly as potent in his 39 games (8-3—11) with the varsity, but he showed enough flashes of offensive promise to make him a viable candidate to win a full-time job in camp.

“Obviously, it’s a blow . . . Frankie looked [at training camp] as an opportunity, we all did,’’ said Sweeney. “How that was going to play out remained to be seen, but he certainly was going to be put into a position to try to grab ahold of it. So he is disappointed, and we are as well . . . and look at it as all injuries are, a setback.’’

Dr. George Theodore will perform the surgery at Mass. General Hospital.

Grzelcyk comfortable

Former Boston University defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was on the ice for the second straight day of camp, undeterred by the slight injury he incurred last Sunday in Buffalo in the club’s rookie game against the Devils.

Grzelcyk, who sustained shoulder and knee injuries during his Terriers tenure, arrived at Warrior early on Friday for a brief skating session prior to his first full workout.

“Just to make sure,’’ said the 5-9, 176-pound Grzelcyk, who did not specify the nature of his injury concern. “After 10 minutes, I felt 100 percent.’’

For the first two days of camp, Grzelcyk paired with veteran blue liner Adam McQuaid and looked comfortable during the hourlong sessions.

“Being out there with him really settled my nerves,’’ said Grzelcyk, who grew up in Charlestown and was selected 85th overall in the 2012 draft. “Obviously, he’s been through the process and stuff. I’m just going to be a sponge out there and soak up any information he has for me.’’

Assistant coach Bruce Cassidy categorized Grzelcyk as a “smooth, effortless-type of player.’’

“He’s the type of player I think you need to see in games as well,’’ noted Cassidy. “What translates from practices to games . . . his ability to join the rush, move the puck . . . will he be a threat offensively? For an undersized defenseman that what’s you think of immediately. There have been some undersized defensemen in the past who’ve done the job defensively, so where’s he going to fit in there?

“He’s healthy right now and this is really his first taste of pro hockey, so I think we are going to reserve judgment until he gets some games under his belt.’’

Rask in fine form

Tuukka Rask, just back in town after playing in the World Cup of Hockey, said he feels in late-October form, given the three weeks of work he just completed in the international tournament. He said he plans to be on the ice Monday for his first practice this season with his Black-and-Gold brethren . . . It’s likely winger David Pastrnak, also just back from World Cup play, also will skate on Monday, although Sweeney made it clear there was no rush for any of the tournament players to join the workout sessions or play in the upcoming exhibition games (Monday and Wednesday at the Garden) . . . David Backes, his play with Team USA wrapped up, has yet to be seen at the practice facility . . . Left wing Tim Schaller, who banged heavily into goalie Zane McIntyre on Friday, did not suit up for Saturday’s workouts. According to Sweeney, the 25-year-old forward suffered a minor lower-body injury and should be back in a day or two . . . Workouts continue in two sessions (10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m.) Sunday at Warrior. Parking is $10 and in the arena’s garage, but is payable only by credit card.
