In a Division 2 showdown dominated by both defenses, fifth-ranked New Haven held on to edge Bentley, 17-13, in Waltham Saturday, extending the Chargers’ Northeast-10 Conference winning streak to 13 and ending the Falcons’ win streak at seven.
In addition to the defenses, the kickers had a big say in the outcome. Chris Scifo’s 30-yard field goal helped seal the win for the Chargers (6-0, 5-0) while Bentley’s Will Lockwood pushed a point-after attempt wide left in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game.
Danny Guadagnoli passed for 193 yards and a pair of TDs in the second half to rally the Falcons (5-1, 4-1) but Bentley’s offense struggled nearly all day. The Falcons finished with 199 total yards, including a net of 6 yards on the ground.
New Haven wasn’t much better offensively, finishing with 288 total yards. Ronnie Nelson passed for 114 yards and a TD and Victor Jones finished with 66 yards on 12 carries and a score.
Jason Thompson caught a 27-yard pass from Nelson to put New Haven ahead, 7-0, early in the second quarter and Jones ran 5 yards for another score with 7:18 left in the period to send the Chargers into halftime up, 14-0.
