Massachusetts’ athletes were well-represented at Saturday’s New England Outdoor Track Championships at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, and the boys produced many of the highlights for the day’s events.
Senior Donovan Henry of Catholic Memorial continued his dominant performance by winning the 200-meter dash in 21.87 seconds after his MIAA State Championships victory in the same event Tuesday. Catholic Memorial also repeated their state championship-winning time of 42.69 to take the 4 x 100 meter relay with Henry, David Bermant, Hanif Conrad, and Joshua Charles.
Xaverian junior Dana Pagliuca excelled in the triple jump (46 feet 3 inches), winning the New England title as a follow-up to his state title. He proved to be one of the elite athletes in his specialty, as did Henry, dominating their respective events this spring.
Some other local boys came through to have a strong impact in the championship. Junior Colin Bennie of Wachusett was successful in following up his state title in the 2-mile with a 9:04.27. Brendan Sullivan, a senior at Westford Academy, won the pole vault event with a 15-3. The Acton-Boxboro 4 x 400 meter relay team, running a 3:21.46, placed second after winning the state title. North Attleboro junior Eric Beckwith also repeated his victory at states in the shot put event with a 57-10 Saturday.
On the girls’ side, Brockton senior Vanessa Clerveaux helped her team come in second in the 4 x 100 meter relay with a 48.94. Mansfield senior Jen Esposito placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a 45.05 after winning the state title.
