Despite facing a two-goal deficit heading into the final period at Walter Brown Arena, BC High came all the way back to defeat Catholic Memorial, 4-3, in the 12th-annual Edward M. Wright Memorial Game Saturday night at Boston University’s Brown Arena.
Trailing, 3-1, entering the third period, the Eagles caught fire behind goals from Sam Topham, Patrick Kramer, and Tom Besigner and skated off with a victory over their Catholic Conference rivals.
Neither team scored in the first 15 minutes, but CM (8-4-2) controlled the pace and started to fly around the ice over the last seven minutes.
The Eagles (9-2-2) notched the first goal, however, when junior forward Adam Foley was left unguarded in front of CM goalie Brandon Collett and scored from point-blank range three minutes into the second period.
CM responded 90 seconds later when defenseman Dennis Medeiros passed to Liam Coughlin, who scored to tie it, 1-1. The Knights bombarded Peter Cronin the rest of the period, scoring two more goals and led, 3-1, heading into the final period.
“We came out really slow in the first and second [period],” said Besigner.
For scoring the winner, Besigner received the game’s MVP award, which was presented by BU coach Jack Parker and BC coach Jerry York.
“We’ve had a breakdown,” CM coach Bill Hanson said. “That happens when you have young teams and we haven’t been able to overcome that.”
