Roundup: Vinny Scotti strike earns Merrimack a point

Vinny Scotti scored two goals, including a shorthanded strike late in the third period, to lift 19th-ranked Merrimack into a 2-2 tie with Providence College in a Hockey East game Sunday night at Schneider Arena.

Shane Luke and Derek Army scored for the Friars (11-10-7, 9-6-6) and Jon Gillies stopped 24 shots.

Sam Marotta also made 24 saves for Merrimack (14-10-6, 12-6-3), which held on to first place in the conference.

Scotti scored the tying goal with 4:56 left. Merrimack’s Kyle Bigos was serving a five-minute major for kneeing when Scotti broke out of his zone with Shawn Bates on a two-on-one rush and swept the puck past Gillies.

Hockey City Classic — Joel Rumpel kicked away a shot as time expired for his 36th save and Wisconsin beat second-ranked Minnesota, 3-2, at Soldier Field in Chicago, in front of an announced crowd of 52,051. Notre Dame beat Miami, 2-1, in the first game on goals by Mario Lucia and Jeff Costello.

Women

BC 4, UConn 0 — Sophomore Alex Carpenter had two goals and an assist, registering her 100th career point in just 65 games, and Megan Miller turned aside all 18 shots to help the No. 2 Eagles (23-5-2, 15-2-1 Hockey East) blank the host Huskies (3-25-3, 1-16-1).

BU 3, Vermont 2 — Isabel Menard had a pair of goals to spark the No. 3 Terriers (20-5-3, 15-2-1 Hockey East) past the visiting Catamounts (8-19-3, 6-10-3).

Northeastern 7, Maine 2 — Kendall Coyne scored twice, powering the Huskies (18-10-2, 10-7-1 Hockey East) over the host Black Bears (5-22-3, 2-15-2).

UNH 3, Providence 3 — Kayla Mork tied it with 2:14 remaining to help the host Wildcats (13-14-3, 9-7-2 Hockey East) earn a point against the Friars (14-12-5, 8-7-3).
