NORTH ATTLEBORO — Trailing by 8 points with the clock winding down, No. 17 BC High drove down the field, setting up a first and 10 at the North Attleboro 28-yard line.
All looked promising for the Eagles. But as they struggled to do all night long, BC High couldn’t finish the drive.
After the first three plays got nowhere, junior quarterback Sean Holleran’s fourth-down scramble came up 4 yards short with 26 seconds remaining and the Red Rocketeers escaped with the 20-12 victory Friday night at Community Field.
Leading, 13-12, with 10:06 to play, North Attleboro senior quarterback James Kummer connected with Dan Moore for a 9-yard touchdown on fourth and goal to push the lead to 20-12. It initially looked like nothing was open for Kummer as the Eagles defense caved in on him, but Kummer bought some time and delivered a strike to Moore, his only catch of the game, right at the pylon.
“You knew it was going to be one of those plays where you just had to make something out of nothing,” North Attleboro coach Don Johnson said. “But good players kind of find a way to get those things done.”
BC High senior Robert Harnais rushed for 229 yards on 27 carries.
Harnais appeared to break a 62-yard touchdown run with 8:39 left that would’ve brought the Eagles within a 2-point conversion of tying the game. But a block-in-the-back penalty negated the run. The drive ended in a turnover on downs just inside the red zone.
“[Harnais] did a great job cutting some things back,” Johnson said. “We really didn’t have a good answer for him other than we had to get a stop and put them in a position to throw the ball.”
Kummer finished with 133 passing yards in the victory. Meanwhile, Holleran only managed two completions on eight attempts for 10 yards.
BC High appeared in control early, marching to the North Attleboro 8-yard line thanks to a 41-yard bolt by Harnais on a toss sweep. But the Eagles fumbled at the goal line and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback.
North Attleboro marched down the field and Kummer’s 7-yard connection with senior Jack Blase with 4:23 left in the first quarter put North Attleboro up, 7-0.
The Eagles got within 7-6 in the second quarter after a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Steve DiCienzo with 7:48 left in the half. The score was set up after North Attleboro snapped the ball over the head of senior punter Kyle Rodriguez’s head. Rodriguez picked up the ball his own 1-yard line before being mauled by the BC High rush.
But the Rocketeers responded with a 51-yard touchdown drive of their own, capped by a 9-yard rush by senior Matt D’Attilio with 4:40 left in the second to put the home team back up, 13-6.
