    2017 Para Athlete All-Scholastics

    With the MIAA establishing adaptive competition in sports such as swimming and track & field, the Globe will now recognize para athletes in our seasonal All-Scholastic sections. Joe Walsh, president of Adaptive Sports New England, assisted in the selection of the first five honorees.

    All-Scholastics

    Mikayla Chandler, Old Rochester, sophomore

    Chandler, who has dwarfism, won the 55-meter dash and shot put at the MIAA Para indoor ambulatory Division 5 state championship. Outdoors, she won 100, shot put, and discus crowns in D5, and the discus at the state meet.

    Cailin Currie, Essex Tech, senior

    Visually impaired, Currie competed for Peabody, placing 37th in the 100-yard butterfly and swimming the first leg of the 200 free relay at the MIAA Division 1 North meet. A member of the 2016 US Paralympic team in Rio, the Danvers resident will attend Merrimack.

    Matt Freitas, Catholic Memorial, sophomore

    The sophomore from Weymouth had his lower right leg amputated at age 11, the result of a car accident. His personal motto since? ‘‘No excuses.’’ He received the Wrestler’s Heart Award this winter. This spring, Freitas started in goal for the Scarlet Knight varsity lacrosse team.

    Chris Kimball, Littleton, senior

    A graduating senior at Littleton who is visually impaired, the Pepperell resident finished 11th in the 2-mile and 25th in the mile at the MIAA Division 5 track championships this spring. He also ran cross country. Kimball will attend Nichols College.

    Elise Morley, Norton, sophomore

    Born with one hand, Morley qualified for MIAA South and All-State Para swim meets in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for the second straight year. The honor roll student also qualified for the US Paralympics emerging squad.
