NEWTON — A persistent offensive attack helped second-seeded Newton South hold off No. 10 Marshfield, 2-1, in a Division 1 South girls’ soccer quarterfinal Tuesday.

Newton South (19-1-0) advanced to meet Whitman-Hanson in a sectional semifinal Thursday at Natick High. W-H edged Hingham, 2-1, on a goal in the 79th minute.

“Our mantra this year has been to deny everything and we have for the most part,” Newton South coach Doug McCarthy said. “This was a frantic game today and it wasn’t easy for either team. It was one of those games that comes down to will and, at times, a little bit of luck, and we had both on our side today.”

The Lions opened the scoring on a corner kick in the 38th minute of the first half, crashing the net to create a loose ball in front of Marshfield goalkeeper Meghan Doyle.

Newton South midfielder Maia Madison’s shot rebounded off the far post, bounced back into the middle of the area, where sophomore Larissa Williams was waiting to bury it.

Just eight minutes into the second half, Marshfield (14-4-1) drew even when senior Amanda Dustin served a throw into the box and Rams captain Grace McGettrick got her head onto the ball to tie the score, 1-1.

Newton South quickly responded.

Sophomore midfielder Lucy Jenks centered a pass to junior Audrey Lavey, who demonstrated more persistence by hammering two blocked shots before finally beating Doyle on her third strike five minutes after Marshfield’s goal.

“It was kind of crazy,” Lavey said. “There was a jumble in front of the goal and it kept coming back to me and I was able to volley it in eventually. Honestly this wasn’t our prettiest game. It’s not how we usually play but we just kept with it.”

Marshfield junior midfielder Kelly McNeil was denied late in the first half on a diving stop by Newton South freshman goalie Olivia Dubin, one of her 11 saves in the game.

“[Dubin] was really cool under pressure today and picked a couple of balls off that I thought were going in,” McCarthy said. “Technically she’s an outstanding goalkeeper and as a freshman she’s handled the pressure at every turn.”
