    QBs Frelick, Bucciaglia are head of the class

    Lexington quarterback Sal Frelick was an elusive target on the football field, compiling 52 total touchdowns as a passer, runner, and receiver in 2017.

    Senior quarterbacks Sal Frelick of Lexington and Steven Bucciaglia of St. John’s Shrewsbury headline the 2017 Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association’s All-State team.

    Frelick, the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, amassed 52 total touchdowns as a passer, runner, and receiver this season and finished his career with more than 10,000 yards from scrimmage and 135 touchdowns.

    Bucciaglia led St. John’s to a 13-0 record and the Division 3 state title, setting Central Massachusetts records with 45 touchdowns and 3,601 passing yards in 2017.


    A committee that included coaches Brian Chamberlain (Braintree), Dave Driscoll (Dighton-Rehoboth), and Steve Allosso (Minnechaug) selected 13 offensive and 13 defensive players from a list of 100 player nominatons.

    In total, 24 of the 26 honorees hailed from the ranks of the MIAA, with Division 1 state champion Everett earning two selections along with BC High, Central Catholic, and Lexington.

    The team will be honored March 4, 2018, at Lantana’s in Randolph.

    Running backs: Danny Abraham, BC High; Isaul Figueroa, Fitchburg; Shane Frommer, King Philip.


    Receivers: Jake Bobo, Belmont Hill; Breese Hill, Nashoba Regional.

    Offensive linemen: Tom Aicardi, BC High; Helber Fagundes, Everett; Osho Omoyeni, Central Catholic; Jonathon Pace, St. Sebastian’s; Patrick Walsh, Wachusett Regional.

    Defensive linemen: Payton Heidtke, Andover; Emil Rossi, Lynn English; David Schwartz, Longmeadow.

    Linebackers: Hunter Ferreira, Mansfield; Joseph Gooley, Duxbury; Sal Lupoli, Chelmsford; Bryce Shaw, Bridgewater-Raynham; Harry Smith, Old Rochester.

    Defensive backs: Brian Abraham, Xaverian; Khalil Blair, Boston Cathedral; Elijah Johnson, East Longmeadow; Jason Maitre, Everett; Ben Quint, Lexington.
