The NFL is relaxing its normally stringent policy on uniforms by allowing players to wear custom cleats representing causes of their choice in Week 13. The initiative is called “My Cause, My Cleats.”
Dont’a Hightower is wearing red cleats Sunday adorned with the American Diabetes Association logo. Hightower’s mother was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.
“Obviously that last couple of years I’ve been speaking on behalf of diabetes awareness, so I took this opportunity to put those on my cleats,’’ said the linebacker.
Cornerback Logan Ryan will wear white cleats featuring a rainbow design and the likeness of his rescued pit bull, Leo, to support his Ryan’s Monthly Rescue project for shelter dogs.

On the 26th of each month, Ryan visits a shelter dog and shares a photo with the dog’s information on social media for prospective owners to see. Ryan started the tradition after he and his fiancée Ashley adopted Leo two years ago.
“We knew he needed a lot of hip surgery. If he wasn’t going to get rescued he probably would have been put down because he had bad legs,” Ryan said. “We were fortunate enough and I’m fortunate enough to be able to rescue him and afford that, and that just got me into the whole shelter dog thing.”

Defensive end Chris Long will wear blue and white cleats with the logo of his Waterboys foundation, which provides clean water to East Africa.
“Clean water was kind of the most bang for your buck,” Long said. “It wasn’t some kind of epiphany. It just made the most sense.”
Offensive lineman Nate Solder, Safety Devin McCourty, longsnapper Joe Cardona, cornerback Logan Ryan, and tight end Martellus Bennett are also participating in #MyCleatsMyCause. Here’s a look at their footwear:
