    Boston Marathon runners are pretty determined, and the stats prove it

    26,411 runners finished the Boston Marathon on Monday.

    Boston Marathon runners sure are a determined group. Statistics from Monday’s 121st running prove it – 27,221 started the race Monday, and 26,411 finished it, a success rate of 97 percent.

    Other numbers shed even more light on the field, which originally had 30,074 entrants. Which states had a 100 percent completion rate? Which New England state had the fastest runner? What was the average finish time for the top 100 women?

    ■ 97.3 percent of men entered started and finished the race

    ■ 96.7 percent of women entered started and finished the race.

    ■ The average finish time for the top 100 men was 2:27:41.

    ■ The average finish time for the top 100 women was 2:50:02.

    ■ The 45- to 49-year-old bracket had the highest finish rate at 97.8 percent.

    ■ The 65- to 69-year-old bracket had the lowest finish rate among age groups with at least 500 entrants at 94.2 percent.

    ■ The men’s age bracket with the highest finish rate was the 45 to 49 year olds at 98.1 percent.

    ■ The women’s bracket with the highest finish rate was tied at 97.5 percent between the 40 to 44 year olds and the 45 to 49 year olds.

    ■ The sole woman in the 80 years and older age group started and finished the race.

    ■ All 53 wheelchair competitors who started the race finished.

    ■ All 28 handcycles competitors who started the race finished.

    ■ All 11 visually impaired women who started the race finished.

    ■ Of the 21,708 US residents who started the race, 21,005 finished, a 96.8 percent finish rate.

    ■ Eight states saw a 100 percent finish rate: Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

    ■ Connecticut had the highest finish rate among New England states with 96.4 percent, followed by Massachusetts and Maine (93.9), Vermont (93.0), Rhode Island (91.3), and New Hampshire (90.1).

    ■ Vermont averaged the fastest time among New England states with 3:51:48, followed by Connecticut (3:56:09), Maine (3:56:56), New Hampshire (4:08:08), Rhode Island (4:08:58), and Massachusetts (4:27:42).

    ■ A Massachusetts runner clocked the fastest time among New England states with 2:15:34, 11th overall. Finish times for the fastest runner for each New England state:

    New Hampshire, 2:29:42, 55th overall.

    Connecticut, 2:31:04, 64th overall.

    Rhode Island, 2:42:43, 248th overall.

    Maine, 2:43:57, 293rd overall.

    Vermont, 2:44:07, 293rd overall.
