Investments, donations put Partners in black

Partners HealthCare Systems Inc. earned $84 million in its most recent fiscal quarter despite a $76 million expense to cover reimbursements to the federal government. Partners posted an operating loss of $12 million after reimbursements of some Medicare payments made between 2010 and 2012, triggered by a policy that will affect all US hospitals, according to the parent company of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. But Partners also recorded $96 million on income from investment gains and philanthropy during the quarter.
