For a top candidate in every late poll, the former Massachusetts governor has been, remarkably, at most a secondary target in the free-for-all, helping him to maintain steady support over the final weeks. Candidates appear to have conceded a top spot in Iowa to Romney and have focused on raising doubts about other rivals scrambling for leading positions in the caucuses.
