Turning back pleas for a smaller project, Hingham Town Meeting on Monday voted 1,354 to 347 for a $4.5 million athletic complex that will include artificial turf and lights for night games at Hingham High. The project includes a multipurpose playing field, more than 2,000 seats in bleachers that comply with federal disability regulations, a press box, sound equipment, reconstruction of the baseball field, relocation of a softball field, improvements for drainage and the parking lot, a concession/storage/bathroom facility, a pedestrian walkway, landscaping, and fencing. A second vote approved artificial turf for the multipurpose field, and a third vote approved the installation of privately funded lights, which will stand 80 feet over the turf. School Committee chairwoman Charyl Falvey said the committee has begun reviewing bids for the work, and construction on the field should begin this summer.
