Hofstra student was killed by officer

NEW YORK

MINEOLA— A New York college student being held by an armed intruder was killed by a Nassau County officer responding to a home invasion at an off-campus home, police said Saturday. Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head on Friday by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder, Dalton Smith, pointed a gun at the officer while holding the woman in a headlock, police said. Smith was also killed. (AP)

FBI searches home in inquiry on ricin

SPOKANE, Wash. — Officials in hazardous materials suits searched an apartment in Spokane on Saturday as they investigated the recent discovery of two letters with the deadly poison ricin. The search came after the letters were found at the post office Tuesday. (AP)

Slaying is termed possible hate crime

NEW YORK — Police said Saturday that a gunman used anti-gay slurs before fatally shooting a 32-year-old man in Greenwich Village on Friday. Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the shooting appears to have been a hate crime. (AP)
