For proper alignment, improve your aim

What’s the best way to make sure your body is aligned properly for shots, from the longest drives to the shortest putts? Bob Beach, the head professional at Braintree Municipal Golf Course, says the answer has to do entirely with correctly aiming the clubface to the target.

How to do that? Beach writes:


“It is my opinion that aim is a fundamental that every golfer should focus on more than alignment. When golfers aim the best is when they are lining up a putt on the green. They pay close attention to aiming the face of the putter on a line to the target, which in this case is the hole.

“I recommend standing directly behind your golf ball to aim the face of your golf club to the target on every shot, including putting. I have found that most of my students focus more on where their body is facing when hitting a full shot and actually aim their body at the target. This is wrong and causes all kinds of problems to the golf swing. I believe the golfer should continue to focus on where the face of the club is aimed.

“I like the image that there is a laser coming from the center of my clubface and I simply point that where I want to go. My body will naturally match up to where I am aiming the clubface. I believe alignment is a byproduct of good aiming.”
