A Southborough man who allegedly raped a child over a seven-year period was captured by New York State Police in Albany based on information from law enforcement officials in Massachusetts, officials said.
Robert Cerqua was tracked down at an Econo Lodge motel late Monday night in the state capital, where he was arrested on Massachusetts warrants charging him with two counts of aggravated rape of a child, rape, indecent assault and battery on a child over 14, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and dissemination of obscene material to a juvenile, State Police said in a statement.
The arrest came after Southborough police asked for assistance tracking down Cerqua. Massachusetts State Police and Framingham police were searching for him in the Framingham area when they learned that Cerqua might be in Albany, State Police said.
Armed with the tip from Massachusetts law enforcement officers, nine New York state troopers set up surveillance around the motel, where they spotted Cerqua’s car and took him into custody without incident.
It was not immediately clear when Cerqua would return to Massachusetts to face the charges.John R. Ellement can be reached at email@example.com.
