Romance Rumble V: Vote for best movie ‘meet-cute’

Globe film critic Ty Burr and Love Letters writer Meredith Goldstein chose their favorite romantic first encounters on film.

In the 2006 trope-filled romantic comedy “The Holiday,” Eli Wallach plays a Hollywood screenwriter who attempts to define what it means to have a cinematic “meet-cute.” He explains, “Say a man and a woman both need something to sleep in and they both go to the same men’s pajama department. The man says to the salesman, ‘I just need bottoms,’ the woman says, ‘I just need a top.’ They look at each other and that’s the ‘meet-cute.’ ” (Read more about Romance Rumble V.)
