Needham sues GateHouse Media for $1.4 million in back taxes, interest

The Town of Needham has sued GateHouse Media for nearly $1 million in property taxes owed on equipment at the publishing company’s New England headquarters.

A complaint filed in Norfolk Superior Court on Wednesday said the company “has failed and refused to pay” $969,000 in taxes on equipment taxable as “personal property” it keeps at 254 Second Ave. since 2009. With a 14 percent interest rate, the amount owed rose to $1.4 million, the complaint said.

Needham Town Counsel David Tobin said he sent a letter requesting payment to GateHouse’s president on Sept. 9, but never received a reply. The company didn’t reply to a request from the Globe for comment.

GateHouse owns scores of publications across New England.
