Former Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields is taking some heat after Donald Trump’s campaign manager was charged with assault.
Corey Lewandowski was charged with simple battery following an altercation with Fields at a March 8 campaign event. A surveillance video released by the police appears to show Lewandowski grabbing Fields as she tried to ask Trump a question.
But some are criticizing Fields’ involvement in the incident.
Piers Morgan, a former CNN journalist who is now the US editor-at-large for the Daily Mail’s website, wrote a column with the headline: “Toughen up! The video of Donald Trump’s campaign manager ‘assaulting’ a female reporter is ridiculous. A man would have been condemned as a laughing stock for complaining.”
Ann Coulter also took to Twitter to mock the incident.
Like Americans everywhere, I know I'll always remember where I was when news arrived of the tragic assault on Michelle Fields.— Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) March 29, 2016
Whatever your politics, whatever your ethnicity or religion, please take a moment to pray for the recovery of brave Michelle Fields.— Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) March 29, 2016
All respect to Harriet Tubman, but it's Michelle Fields who should go on the $20 bill. Her courage will inspire generations yet unborn.— Ann Coulter (@AnnCoulter) March 29, 2016
During a campaign event Tuesday night in Wisconsin, Trump doubled down on his support for his campaign manager.
He said the ‘‘easiest thing’’ to have done would have been to say, ‘‘Corey, you’re fired.’’ But Trump said he would not do it ‘‘because it would destroy a man’s life.’’
In comments to reporters earlier, Trump says he doesn’t ‘‘discard people’’ and called the situation ‘‘very unfair’’ to Lewandowski, one of his closest advisers.
