Music makes the people come together. . . except for when it’s canceled.

Madonna, she of “Vogue” and “Material Girl” fame, has called off three Boston shows on her Madame X tour scheduled for Nov. 30, Dec. 1, and Dec. 2 at the Wang Theatre “due to doctor’s orders.”

“Please forgive this unexpected turn of events,” Madonna said in a statement distributed by Live Nation on Wednesday. “Doing my show every night brings me so much joy and to cancel is a kind of punishment for me but the pain I’m in right now is overwhelming and I must rest and follow doctor’s orders so I can come back stronger and better and continue the Madame X journey with all of you.”

It was not immediately clear what health issues the star was suffering from.

The show cannot be rescheduled, Live Nation officials said, due to “the tight scheduling through the balance of the year.” Fans who were planning to attend will get refunds automatically issued to the credit card they used to order tickets.

“We are sorry and regret the disappointment to fans in Boston,” Live Nation officials said in the statement.

No other concerts on Madonna’s 2019 tour will be affected, officials said.

The Madame X tour is scheduled to resume on Dec. 7 with three shows at The Met in Philadelphia before heading to Miami to play seven shows starting Dec. 14.
