Human remains were recovered from the back of a property in Methuen Thursday afternoon, the FBI’s Boston office said.

The remains were found at 145 Milk St. at 4:15 p.m., the FBI said in a press release. The remains will be turned over to the state medical examiner’s office for identification and DNA analysis.

"The FBI will remain on scene until we have completed processing the location where the remains were located," the bureau said in the release..

The remains were found after a multi-day search of the property. On Wednesday, Kristen Setera, an FBI spokeswoman, declined to say what the agents were looking for; she said the FBI’s evidence response team was on scene as part of an “ongoing investigation.” There than there was no threat to the public.

Other law enforcement agencies also assisted in the search, including the Lawrence Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Essex district attorney’s office, and the Manchester Police Department in New Hampshire, according to the release.

Heather Hamel, a spokeswoman for Manchester police said, in an e-mail Thursday night that “investigators have been working with the FBI on an active missing persons case,”

She deferred further comment to the FBI.

The investigation remains ongoing and no further information was available, the release said.
