During the 2020-21 academic year, the Globe tracked coronavirus clusters and other reported cases in Massachusetts schools, with most case reports coming from the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Starting in late October, school districts were required to report coronavirus cases among students and staff who had been inside school buildings to state education officials. Cases among students and staff who were learning or teaching in a fully remote model were not being tracked by the state.

The number of cases reported in schools rose through the late fall and early winter, but dropped in the final weeks of the year as more staff members and older students were able to get vaccinated.

Most incidents on the map below have been tracked and reported by state education officials, but some have been independently confirmed by the Globe.
