EMass. girls’ basketball: Nauset’s Avery Burns headlines Players of the Week

Top performances from EMass. girls’ basketball players in the past week:

MacKenzie Balfore, Cape Cod Academy — The junior forward racked up 18 points and 11 rebounds as CCA outlasted Sturgis West, 41-28, in the Seahawks’ Cape & Islands season opener.

Avery Burns, Nauset — On her way to a program-record 38 points, the senior guard drained a pair of 3-pointers and was 4 of 5 from the free throw line, and also added three assists in a 90-22 Cape & Islands win over Nantucket.

Emma Cochrane, Norton — In her varsity debut, the freshman scored 19 points and powered the Lancers to a 60-47 win over Dover-Sherborn in the Tri-Valley.


Claire Ewen, Arlington — The senior finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks as the Spy Ponders (2-0) pulled away from Middlesex League foe Woburn, 48-30, on Saturday. Ewen also posted 9 points and 12 boards in the teams’ first meeting, when Arlington’s seniors knocked off the Tanners for the first time in their high school careers.

Faith Newton, North Reading — In a 48-29 Cape Ann win over Georgetown, the sophomore finished with 19 points. North Reading also snuck past Hamilton-Wenham, 41-37, last Tuesday.
