Two people were killed in a house fire Wednesday morning in Sheffield, officials said.
In a statement, Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington’s office said neighbors called in the blaze at 1715 Hewins St. around 5:49 a.m.
Fire departments from several communities responded to find the home “fully engulfed in flames,” the statement said, adding that first responders discovered the remains of two adults inside. Their names weren’t immediately disclosed.
Authorities said the State Police Detective Unit assigned to Harrington’s office is investigating along with Sheffield police and State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey’s office.
“While the fire remains under investigation, preliminary evidence does not indicate that the fire is suspicious in nature,” the statement said.
Officials said the state medical examiner’s office took custody of the victims’ remains to perform autopsies and “positively identify” them.
